IT'S NOT MUSIC, IT'S MEMORIES #2 WITH MAVERICK SABRE.
It was never just sound, music has always been memories.
People who "don't like music" think they're the coolest flavour of contrarian. They believe they’re avoiding the trivial, when in actuality - they’re missing the point. They’re missing a magic trick. Music is a hack in the game of bottling moments. A preservation agent for magic that would otherwise evaporate. They're saying no to emotional teleportation.
When you say you don't like music, you're telling me you’re willing to let the memories fade. You’re fine with people, places, feelings, moments falling away.
And yeah, that makes me a little mad sad…
Because it's not music.
It's memories.
Here’s what happened when I asked Maverick Sabre to allow us into his past and it began with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Bellybuttons. I shit you not.
MUSICAL MEMORY #1 NEIL YOUNG - HEART OF GOLD
MUSICAL MEMORY #2 RAY CHARLES - GEORGIA ON MY MIND
What do siblings, samples and Jamie Foxx doing a Ray Charles impersonation have in common? Press play…
AND LETS NOT FORGET THAT LUDA / JAMIE FOXX FLIP…
MUSICAL MEMORY #3 DIZZEE RASCAL - STOP DAT
When a More Fire B-Side, leads to a message on Myspace (Shout to Tom), which then leads to a set list - you’ve got a core memory…
MUSICAL MEMORY #4 THE PRODIGY - OUT OF SPACE
Phil Mitchell, Mosh pits and a much welcomed interruption only this type of conversation could encourage. This is what happened when our chat, compelled a man having a quiet drink to share his musical memory too… He’s off mic, but you can just about make out his Prodigy musical memory…
Thanks to Maverick Sabre for sharing his musical memories, in what was an amazing afternoon at my new local. For further context, I wrote about getting to know your new neighbourhood through its best watering hole here.
