I’ve never been a fan of Pubs.
Maybe it’s the smell, the dark wood… maybe even the sticky carpets. Maybe it’s down to the way ‘public houses’ were introduced. As a teenager, I was the only one of the boys who didn’t drink. Still don’t. Never started, never felt like I was missing out. It just… wasn’t for me.
But then you grow up… then you have that magical Sunday roast that changes everything. Then you start talking to the people… and that’s when you realise you may have got the whole pub thing wrong.
Recently I moved home, and with my new postcode came that familiar need to know exactly who I was living amongst. The butchers, the coffee shop, the dry cleaner all did their part in telling me just how welcoming the neighbourhood might be.
But what about the boozer?
Before you ask, no. Still don’t partake, but pubs have taken on a new importance in recent years. Wherever I call home, I find my spot in the local watering hole. Why? Pubs are a cheat code for what comfort might look like to your neighbours.
So, when I set a midweek music with Maverick Sabre, I knew there was only one place we could meet, drink and talk all things music. My new local.
Believe it or not, the drinks were non-alcoholic. The conversation was predominantly off mic. The bits I did record though, gold. So, to be clear, I’m still not a ‘Pub guy’. Still don’t drink, but I love my new local. Love that I’ve started to meet my new neighbours properly, and that’s during the football of course.
Most of all, I love that the first time I’ve allowed The Reset reigns into the hands of another, they came in the shape of one of the most talented and good fucking hangs I’ve had in a while.
This is what Maverick Sabre would love you to listen to this Wednesday. As well as the tracks, Mav explains why he’s made these picks, so make sure you hit play.
This is Midweek Music 005.
#1 ANGELIC BY SLICK RICK - Mav explains why below…
#2 DOVE BY CYMANDE - Hear why below...
#3 JEDI MIND TRICKS - UNCOMMON VALOUR - This one takes on a whole new meaning with the explanation from Mav… hit play.
So this is what it feels like to pass the aux… three incredible choices and its definitely a fresh way to share music… Shall we do this again? Any suggestions as to who else I should pass the aux to?
As ever, sound off in the comments and thanks again to Maverick Sabre. Stream or purchase Maverick Sabre’s latest album ‘Burn The Right Things Down’ HERE.
Oh wow, a lot of love for this collab!
Whoa! I really loved the second song, right up my alley! Per usual, I have MM to thank for introducing me to something new.
What I was not expecting (as I'm listening to this at the top of my morning US time) was to be struck by Maverick's intro to the third pick. Hearing him talk about the generational effects from the Vietnam War- the war where my grandfather died, the effects of chemicals sprayed not just there but at home for "testing", the things I've sorted out with my own family, the effects I spent part of my career focused on - whew, THAT GOT ME!
